Canadian Institute of Environmental Law and Policy (CIELAP)
has just released an important new document discussing a
policy framework for nanotechnology in Canada. Nanotechnology
is the ability to measure, see, manipulate and manufacture
materials at the scale of between 1 and 100 nanometers (nm).

NASA Nanotechnology
Space Sensor Test Successful in Orbit

NASA
recently tested the first nanotechnology-based electronic
device to fly in space. The test showed that the "nanosensor"
could monitor trace gases inside a spaceship. This technology
could lead to smaller, more capable environmental monitors and
smoke detectors in future crew habitats.

scientists said attaching polymeric nanoparticles to red blood
cells might become a new way to deliver drugs. University of
California-Santa Barbara researchers determined the procedure
dramatically increases the in vivo lifetime of the nanoparticles, suggesting new applications for the delivery of
drugs and circulating bioreactors.

creates unique transistors

U.S.
scientists have used nanotechnology to create transparent
transistors for use in such consumer electronics as "e-paper"
and flexible screens. The research, led by scientists at
Purdue and Northwestern universities, involves transistors
consisting of "nanowires," or tiny cylindrical structures that
are assembled on glass or thin films of flexible plastic.

award of two grants totaling almost $600,000 to Oregon State
